Connector lines in PPT 2019

Although connector lines look a lot like simple lines, they are fundamentally different. Connectors "connect" two shapes or any other slide objects to each other. When you move one of the connected objects the connector resizes and repositions automatically. 

Default connector lines

Go to Insert - Shapes - and choose a connector line in the Lines section. These are the types available:

Connect directly

Select the connector and draw a line starting in a connector point. Adapt the line using the diamond shaped handle. You can move/rotate/resize the shape in any way the connector stays active.

Connect indirectly

Connect the line/connector after it has been drawn. When you drag the beginpoint/endpoint of a line and approach an object connector points appear and you can connect to them.

With both procedures you can alter the connector type by right-clicking the line.

Add extra connector points to a shape

You can add connector points to shapes. Select the shape and click the contextual tab Format shape, in the Insert shape group click the Edit shape button and then select Edit points. Carefully click on the border of the shape at a chosen spot. Do not move your mouse when clicking.

You can use the new connector point to add a connector line. 

Connect shapes with self-drawn curves, freeforms and scribbles

You can't connect a curved line, freeform or scribble to another object directly. You have to draw them first then connect to the other objects. Here is a sample of such shapes:

Move task panes to a tab in PPT 2021

If you have several task panes open a lot of screen real estate is covered up. It is possible now to move task panes to a tab.

Here's an example of the selection and animation pane which are both open.

Click on the arrow next to the name of your task pane and choose Move to tab. 

This is the result when the animation pane is moved to tab.

You can move the pane out again by clicking the same arrow and choosing Move out of tab:

You can hide or make appear task panes by clicking the icons in the tab. Here's the result when I clicked the animation pane icon:

If you want you can make all task panes move to the tab waiting for you to activate them again.

No design ideas in PPT 2019-2021, alternative: use PPT online

Design ideas is a function that is only available for 365 subscribers. In standalone versions of PPT 2019-2021 you will not find it. There is an alternative though, you can find design ideas in the online version of PPT.

You can use design ideas in a presentation in Office online then download it to your desktop computer and use it.

Every month you are allowed to use Design ideas for free three times.

I've used screenshots in the Dutch version of PPT for the web, I have not got acces to an English version, sorry for that.

Go to your OneDrive account and select PPT in the apps.

Start a new blank presentation or choose one of the themes.

If it is the first time you use design ideas click on the option Try it now in the Design task pane. The next time the question will no longer be asked.

Choose one of the designs in the taskpane.

The design is added to your slide.

Add a new slide(s), below you can see a Section header.

Save on OneDrive and download to your desktop.

Add as many slides as you want and save the presentation in OneDrive. Click ... Save as. Or click in the ribbon Saved in One Drive and type the name of your file en choose the location.

Download your presentation to your desktop computer. 

Download a copy to your desktop

You can also choose Download copy. Click the Download button, choose the folder on your desktop and save it.

Open your presentation in PPT. A dafety warning message may appear as the presentation is coming from the internet, click en dus in de beveiligde weergave is geopend. Klik op de knop Enable editing. 

Click on Edit button to open on your desktop

Click the Edit button. Click Open in desktop app

Click on the Open PowerPoint button

Now save the presentation on your desktop app.

If your slides are already made you can upload your desktop presentation to OneDrive and take it from there.

To create your presentation design you can also insert one or more pictures on your slide. Designer will adapt the design using your photos. If you choose the stockpictures option you will notice that you will have to purchase almost all of the pictures. Some are free, you will recognise them because there is no icon in the left hand corner of the thumbnail. Below I have chosen one of those pictures, see the red square.

So generally you will have to choose from the pictures that Microsoft's browser Bing offers.

If you already used three design ideas you will have to wait to the following month and start over.

Ontwerpideeën ontbreekt in PPT 2019-2021, alternatief: gebruik PPT online

Ontwerpideeën is een functie die alleen beschikbaar is voor de abonnees van Office 365. In de standalone versies PPT 2019-2021 is dit niet beschikbaar. Gelukkig kan je via een omweg toch een beroep doen op de functie aangezien ze ook aanwezig is in de gratis webversie van PPT.

Je kan de ontwerpideeën toepassen in een presentatie op office online en vervolgens downloaden naar je bureaucomputer.

Per maand krijg je 3 keer de mogelijkheid om Ontwerpideeën gratis toe te passen.

Ga naar je OneDrive account en selecteer PPT bij de apps.

Start een nieuwe blanco presentatie of kies uit een van de aangeboden thema's.

Kies in het ontwerper taakvenster voor de optie Nu uitproberen. Dit scherm krijg je enkel de eerste keer dat je dergelijke ontwerpen wil toepassen.

Klik op een van de voorgestelde ontwerpen.

Meteen wordt dit design toegepast.

Voeg een nieuwe dia toe, hieronder is dat bijvoorbeeld een Sectiekop.

De presentatie kan je nu op verschillende manieren naar je desktop brengen.

Opslaan op OneDrive en downloaden naar de desktop.

Voeg zoveel dia's toe als je wenst en bewaar de presentatie in OneDrive via ... Opslaan als. 

Download ze dan naar je bureaucomputer. 

Of klik bovenaan in de balk op Opgeslagen in OneDrive en typ de naam in van je bestand, kies de locatie op OneDrive. Download ze dan naar je desktop.

Open de presentatie op je desktop door te navigeren naar de gebruikte map. Er kan een waarschuwingsboodschap verschijnen aangezien de presentatie van het internet afkomstig is en dus in de beveiligde weergave is geopend. Klik op de knop Bewerken inschakelen. 

Kopie downloaden naar je desktop

Je kan ook in het menu kiezen voor Kopie downloaden. Met één klik op de knop Downloaden kan je vervolgens de map kiezen op je bureaucomputer en de presentatie opslaan.

Via bewerken kiezen voor openen op de desktop

Klik op de knop Bewerken in het lint. Klik op Openen in desktop app.

Klik op de knop PowerPoint openen

Dan rest je er nog alleen om het bestand in PPT op te slaan.

Ontwerpideeën werkt het best als je inhoud op de dia's toevoegt. Dat kan tekst zijn of één of meerdere afbeeldingen, tabellen, lijsten e.d.. Designer komt dan met een aangepast design waar de tekst/foto('s) zijn in opgenomen. 

Hieronder zie je een voorstel aan de hand van een ingetypte lijst.

Als je de optie stockafbeeldingen gebruikt zal je merken dat je voor bijna alle afbeeldingen zal moeten betalen. Hier en daar wordt er een gratis aangeboden. Zie hieronder de aangevinkte afbeelding en die ernaast bevatten geen pictogram en kunnen dus gratis gebruikt worden.
