Achtergrond verwijderen van een foto met app Foto's van Windows 11 - PPT 2019-2024

In een vroeger artikel heb ik al eens geblogd over het verwijderen van de achtergrond. Klik op de link hieronder, het artikel dateert van maart 2016 toen nog met de versie PPT 2013. 

Achtergrond verwijderen

Intussen is er niet zoveel veranderd aan het concept in PPT 2024.

Het lijkt erop dat Microsoft in PowerPoint 365 daarentegen de handmatige tool om de achtergrond te verwijderen vervangt door een nieuwe AI-achtige afbeeldingseditor. Het zou dus kunnen dat de opties 'gebieden markeren om te behouden of verwijderen' niet meer aanwezig zijn. 

Voorlopig kan je ze alsnog toevoegen door te klikken om het pijltje naar beneden naast de werkbalk Snelle toegang en te kiezen bij Meer opdrachten voor Alle opdrachten.

Scroll naar beneden en selecteer Achtergrond verwijderen. Klik op de knop Toevoegen. Klik op OK. De oude tool Achtergrond verwijderen wordt toegevoegd aan de rechterkant van de werkbalk snelle toegang.

Achtergrond verwijderen in PPT 2024

In de versie PPT 2024 is de oude tool nog altijd aanwezig. De achtergrond kan niet verwijderd worden van:

• vectorafbeeldingen (SVG, EMF, WMF),
• afbeeldingen die als dia-achtergrond zijn ingesteld,
• geanimeerde GIF's (alleen het eerste frame wordt verwerkt). 

Als je toch een vectorafbeelding wil gebruiken moet je eerst exporteren naar het grafisch formaat png.

Als test heb ik twee foto's gebruikt via de optie Invoegen - Afbeelding - Stock afbeeldingen. Bij de ene foto (vrijheidsbeeld) is de achtergrond nogal complex. 

Dit is het resultaat na het accepteren van de wijzigingen:

Na het aanpassen met de correctietools bekom je uiteindelijk het volgende resultaat maar dat vergt een aantal wijzigingen.

Bij de tweede foto lijkt de achtergrond wat eenvoudiger.

Alternatief: werken met de app Foto's uit Windows 11

Start de app Foto's die je gemakkelijk terugvind in het startmenu.

Selecteer de foto en klik op de knop Bewerken:

Klik op de knop Achtergrond en kies Achtergrond verwijderen.

Let op de gearceerde delen van de foto, deze delen zullen verwijderd worden.

Met de achtergrondkwast kan je het masker toevoegen of verwijderen. De gearceerde lijnen tonen nu het bekomen resultaat.

Bij de tweede foto is het resultaat met de app foto's meteen heel wat beter en is er weinig corrigeerwerk. 

De resultaten zijn dus sterk afhankelijk van de gekozen foto. Hoe egaler de achtergrond hoe beter het resultaat.

Remove background of a photo with photo app Windows 11 and use in PPT 2019-2024

Remove background

The underlying concept hasn't changed much in PPT 2024.

However, it appears that in PowerPoint 365 though, Microsoft is replacing the manual background removal tool with a new AI-powered image editor. Consequently, the options to Mark areas to keep or remove may no longer be available.

For now, you can still add them by clicking the down arrow of the Quick Access Toolbar, under 'Choose commands from' select More Commands, and then choose All Commands.

Scroll down and select Remove Background. Click the Add button, then click OK. The classic Remove Background tool will be added to the right side of the Quick Access Toolbar.

Removing the background in PPT 2024

The old tool is still available in PPT 2024. You cannot remove the background from:

• vector images (SVG, EMF, WMF),
• images set as slide backgrounds,
• animated GIFs (only the first frame is processed).

If you still want to use a vector image, you must first export it to the PNG graphic format.

For testing purposes, I used two photos via the Insert - Image - Stock Images option. One of the photos (Statue of Liberty) has a rather complex background.

After making adjustments using the correction tools, you get the following result, though it requires a few modifications.

The background of the second photo appears somewhat simpler.

Alternative: using the Windows 11 Photos app

Launch the Photos app, which you can easily find in the Start menu.

Select the photo and click the Edit button: 

Click the Background button and select Remove background. Note the shaded areas of the photo; these parts will be removed.

You can use the background brush to add to or remove from the mask. The shaded lines now show the resulting effect.

With the second photo, the result using the Photos app is much better right away, requiring very little correction.

The results therefore depend heavily on the chosen photo. The more uniform the background, the better the result.

Scrolling text which appears and disappears in the middle of the slide - PPT 2019-2024

Is it possible to make text appear and disappear in a specific area of the slide (like credits from a movie?)

Well yes it is, see the video below for an example.

To make this happen follow the next steps.

Choose the Blank slide layout. 

First we will define the area where the text should scroll.

Draw a rectangle covering the whole surface of the slide.

Right-click it and choose Format Shape, select the radio button Slide background fill and under Line click on No line.

Now draw a second rectangle on top of the first one. This rectangle will determine the space where the text will appear and disappear.

Give this rectangle the same format als the first one.

To simplify drawing you can add two guidelines equidistant from the center of the slide. Press Alt+F9 to make the guide lines appear, and drag two lines while holding down the Ctrl key. In the video, I placed two lines 4 cm from the center.

Now select both rectangles, click the Format Shape tab and in the Insert Shapes group select Merge Shapes and then Combine. A gap has been created in the larger rectangle allowing the text to scroll.

Apply the Title only layout to your slide using the Slide Layout button on the Home tab. Then adjust the width of the placeholder by dragging one of the handles using the Ctrl key so that it covers the full width of the slide. Type your text and format it the way you want.

To let the text scroll you have two options either you create one text box and let the paragraphs scroll one by one. Or you create the necessary individual boxes for each item. In the video I have chosen the latter.

So create the text boxes (five in my example) and position them on top of each other. Click Format shape tab, Align button, select Align top. Move the text boxes to just below the gap we made earlier. Then put them in the background using the Send backward button and the Send to back option.

Leave the boxes selected and apply a motion path to them. Click the Animation tab, Add animation button, under Motion paths select the Line button. In the ribbon click the Effect options button and choose Up.

Now we need to adjust the motion path of each text box. Press Alt+F10 to activate the selection pane. Click the Hide all button. Click the icon next to the first text box to make it appear and adjust the path by selecting it and dragging the red end point to just above the visible slide.

Click on the Show all button. 

Select all the animations in the animation selection pane and next to Begin choose With previous. Next to Duration click in the box, type the number of seconds and press enter (in the video I chose 15 seconds). Select the first animation and reinstate After click.

To make the animations appear one after the other we will have to apply a delay. To make that easy right-click any animation and choose Show Advanced Timeline.

Drag the animation boxes to the right making sure that every item starts a few seconds after the previous. In the video I put a delay of 4 seconds.
