When you select objects by dragging the mouse in the PPT desktop version you have to be very precise, omitting just a tiny bit will result in not selecting the object.
In the web version this is not the case, dragging will ensure to select every object even if the selection does not cover the whole object. While you drag the object will appear as selected.
In the desktop version dragging must be precise by covering the whole object. While you drag the object will not appear selected until you release the mouse button. In some cases that proves to be difficult.
