Change a placeholder into a text box in PPT 2019-2024

Is it possible to change a placeholder into an ordinary text box in PPT?

Not really.

You could be tempted to just go to the Home tab and in the slides group click on the Layout button and choose the Blank layout. Or if you wanted to maintain only the title placeholder, change the slide layout to Title only.

Here's an example of a slide with placeholders (left) and one with the blank layout (right).

You will see that the placeholders changed position. So how can you actually tell that they are still placeholders?

Just remove the text of the title and you will see there is a prompt left. Click to add title and Click to add text are still displayed. If you reinstate the original layout the placeholders will go to there original position again.

The only way to change the placeholder to a text box is to copy paste the placeholder. I do this using CTRL+drag. If you then remove the text there will no longer be a prompt appearing in the box. Then remove the original placeholder.

If you do not delete the original placeholder and go to the selection pane (Alt+F10) you will see that both objects have the same name/number which could lead to some confusion.

In the example below you can see the copied placeholder with the text removed. To show there is a second text box I applied an outline otherwise you would not see the box.

To delete the original placeholder, click on the its edge and press delete, the text will disappear leaving the prompt allowing you to add new text. Then click the edge again and press delete.

You can add a placeholder to a new or existing slide design easily in PPT 2013. Just go to View - Master - and click the Insert Placeholder button.

Drag with your mouse, you get a placeholder with default prompt:

But how can you add a placeholder without a prompt.

Right-click the added placeholder, choose Edit text from the quick menu.

The default prompt disappears. First click the Home tab and in the Paragraph group click the bullet button. That way there will be no bullet in the placeholder.

As a last step type a space in the placeholder, that way the placeholder will remain empty. Without the space the default prompt will return.

Bij tijdelijke aanduidingen met een opgesomde lijst krijg je bij het automatisch gedrag een aantal bijkomende mogelijkheden. Ook hier is het de bedoeling de hoeveelheid tekst per dia te beperken. De tekengrootte wordt dus wel degelijk aangepast ook als je een van de andere opties kiest. Vooral bij het doorgaan op een nieuwe dia moet je dus goed opletten.

Zo kan je bv. de tekst verdelen over twee dia's of in kolommen werken.

In een vorige bijdrage had ik het over het standaardgedrag bij het intypen van tekst in een tijdelijke aanduiding (titelvak). Daarbij verschijnt een pictogram wanneer de tekst niet meer past in de aanduiding. Meteen gaf ik aan hoe je dit standaardgedrag kunt uitschakelen. Naargelang je keuze krijg je een pictogram met de volgende mogelijkheden:

Het is je waarschijnlijk ook al opgevallen, je bekijkt een presentatie en je merkt dat de tekengrootte van bv. een titelvak varieert van dia tot dia. Oogt niet echt professioneel. Meestal is de verandering heel miniem zodat je er niet meteen op let. PPT past de tekengrootte van een tijdelijke aanduiding of tekstvak automatisch aan zodat de tekst altijd in het vak past.

Hier een voorbeeld van een hoofdtitel die niet aangepast is:

Je merkt dat de tekengrootte aangepast werd en dat er bij de tijdelijke aanduiding een pictogram is verschenen dat je toelaat dit gedrag uit te schakelen.

Als je dit automatisch gedrag wil uitschakelen voor alle presentaties doe je het volgende.

Start - Opties - Controle - AutoCorrectie opties, kies voor tabblad AutoOpmaak tijdens typen en vink onderaan de opties voor het automatisch aanpassen van tijdelijke aanduidingen uit.

Op deze manier zal je verplicht worden van niet teveel tekst in te typen in tijdelijke aanduidingen en verlost zijn van dat vervelende verschil in tekengrootte.

Ever been confronted with placeholders that seem to vary in font size from slide to slide?

You can get this with all placeholders, PPT adjusts the size of the text when you type in more text than fits in the box.

Here's an example of a title placeholder with non ajusted text:

and one with adjusted text, notice the decrease in font size and the little options icon that appears which allows you to stop the behaviour.

You can change this behaviour for all your presentations by going to:
Start - Options - Proofing and choosing AutoCorrect options:

Then under Autoformat as you type, uncheck the Autofit options for placeholders:

Now your text will not autofit anymore. This is a good thing as you will be obliged to limit the amount of text you type in title or other placeholders. And the annoying size changes will not occur anymore.

Soms wil je wel eens wat anders. Is het mogelijk om de vorm van de tijdelijke aanduiding van de titel te veranderen? 

Ja dat kan, eigenlijk kan je iedere AutoVorm vervangen door een andere.

Als je voor alle dia's een tijdelijke aanduiding wil veranderen ga je best naar het diamodel. Dit is de procedure in PPT 2003.

• Beeld - Model - Diamodel
• Selecteer de tijdelijke aanduiding voor de titel
• Klik op de knop Tekenen in de werkbalk Tekenen
• Klik op de menukeuze AutoVorm wijzigen
• Selecteer een van de vele categorieën in de AutoVormen, bijvoorbeeld Basisvormen. Selecteer een gepaste AutoVorm bv. een afgeronde rechthoek of trapezium.

• Als je nu een rand toevoegt aan je AutoVorm via de knop Lijnkleur in de werkbalk Tekenen krijgt de tijdelijke aanduiding meteen de gewenste vorm.
• Je kan de AutoVorm nog aanpassen door de kleine gele bijstellingsgrepen te gebruiken.

Voor PowerPoint 2007, doe je het volgende:

• Tabblad Beeld - knop Diamodel in de groep Presentatieweergaven
• Selecteer de eerste miniatuur, het diamodel. Of selecteer een van de onderstaande dia-indelingen afhankelijk van wat je wil bekomen.
• Selecteer de tijdelijke aanduiding voor de titel, of om het even dewelke tijdelijke aanduiding die je wenst aan te passen.
• Selecteer het contextuele tabblad Opmaak aan de rechterzijde van het lint.
• Selecteer de knop Vorm bewerken in de groep Vorm Invoegen en selecteer het item Vorm wijzigen.
• Selecteer een van de vele categorieën in de AutoVormen, bijvoorbeeld Basisvormen. Selecteer een gepaste AutoVorm bv. een afgeronde rechthoek of trapezium.



• Voeg een rand toe aan de tijdelijke aanduiding via de knop Omtrek van vorm in de groep Vormstijlen. De tijdelijke aanduiding heeft nu de gekozen vorm.
• Je kan de AutoVorm nog aanpassen door de kleine gele bijstellingsgrepen te gebruiken.
• Klik op het tabblad Diamodel, klik op de knop Modelweergave sluiten.

Je bent klaar.

Sometimes you want something different. Is it possible to change the shape of a placeholder to another shape? Yes this is possible, in fact you can change any shape you have drawn to another.

If you want all placeholders to change shape go to the slide master. Here's how in PPT 2003:

• View - Master - Slide master
• Select the title placeholder
• On the drawing toolbar, click the Draw button
• Click Change Autoshape
• Select one of the many categories of AutoShapes, for example Basic shapes. Select an appropriate shape, say a rounded rectangle or keystone.
• Now, if you apply a border to your placeholder it will have the chosen shape. To do that click the Line colour button on the Drawing toolbar and choose an appropriate colour.
• You can adjust the AutoShape to your liking using the little yellow diamond shaped handles.

For PowerPoint 2007, do this:

• View tab - Slide Master button
• Select the first thumbnail which is the Slide master or select any of the Slide Layouts beneath it, depending on what you want to change.
• Select the title placeholder, or any other placeholder you want to change.
• Choose the Format contextual tab on the far right of the ribbon.
• Select the Edit shape button in the Shapes group.
• Select the Change shape item.
• Select one of the many categories of AutoShapes, for example Basic shapes. Select an appropriate shape, say a rounded rectangle or keystone.
• In the Shape Styles group, click Shape Outline button and choose an appropriate border.
• Now your placeholder will have the chosen shape.
• You can adjust the AutoShape to your liking using the little yellow diamond shaped handles.
• Click the Slide Master tab, click the Close Master button.

That's it.
