Of course you can also make use of the crop function.
Insert your picture.
Click on the Crop button under Picture tools, Format tab. Click Crop.
Eight handles appear on your picture. You can use any of them to crop your picture. In this case this would take several operations to get a satisfactory result. To avoid that, ctrl+drag with one of the corner handles, this will crop on four sides simultaneously.
Then position the cursor on the border of the crop window and drag the window to the part of the picture you want to use.
Now click next to the picture to place it on the slide.
Warning!
Be aware that the whole picture is still there. When you reactivate the crop function you will clearly see the original picture. So it is possible to adjust your crop. To get rid of these superfluous parts, choose Picture tools, Format tab, click on the Compress pictures button.
