Zoom in on a photo in a placeholder using the crop function - PPT 2019

For this example I created a new slide layout in the master and added two picture placeholders. If you want to do that go to View - Slide master - click on the Insert layout button - choose the Insert placeholder button and select Picture. Drag two placeholders for pictures next to each other. Close the master by clicking on the Close master view button.

Now make a new slide in your presentation using the new slide layout.

Add the photo you want to zoom in on in the placeholder by clicking on the icon in the middle of the placeholder. Navigate to the folder containing your photo and insert it in both placeholders.

To zoom in, select the placeholder, under Picture tools click Format tab and in the size group click the crop button and choose crop.

Now enlarge the area of the placeholder:

Click and drag in the photo to center it inside the original placeholder.

Click outside the placeholder, the photo is larger and still remains between the original placeholder borders.

Crop a picture to a circle shape

If you want to crop a picture to a circle shape seems only the oval shape is available.
You can adjust the format though.

Insert your picture and crop using the Crop button in the Size group on the Format tab.

After cropping click the dialog starter button in the bottom right corner of the Size group.

Click the picture button and the crop option.

Under Crop position, enter the same size next to width and height.

Crop a video in PPT 2013

You can crop a video just like any photo in PPT.

Here is an example of a waterfall.

I want to concentrate on the waterfall and not so much on the surrounding area.

Select the video and click on the Crop button of the Format tab in the Video Tools contextual tab.

In this case I am going to position in the middle of the vertical axe and drag the handle while using the ctrl-key. The video will be equally cropped on both sides.

This is the end result:

In my previous article I showed you how to use a part of a picture by applying the Combine shapes function.

Of course you can also make use of the crop function.

Insert your picture.
Click on the Crop button under Picture tools, Format tab. Click Crop.

Eight handles appear on your picture. You can use any of them to crop your picture. In this case this would take several operations to get a satisfactory result. To avoid that, ctrl+drag with one of the corner handles, this will crop on four sides simultaneously.

Then position the cursor on the border of the crop window and drag the window to the part of the picture you want to use.

Now click next to the picture to place it on the slide.

Warning!
Be aware that the whole picture is still there. When you reactivate the crop function you will clearly see the original picture. So it is possible to adjust your crop. To get rid of these superfluous parts, choose Picture tools, Format tab, click on the Compress pictures button.

Then click OK and the cropped areas from your picture will be deleted.

This time I am going to use Combine shapes to extract part of a picture. Sometimes you do not need the whole picture but a certain part.

Of course I could use the Crop function. But this time I will choose Combine shapes and leave cropping to another article.

Insert your picture on the slide.
Draw your shape and place it above the picture. You can choose any shape, but in this case I will -choose the rectangle.

Remove the fill and border (under Drawing tools, buttons Picture fill and Picture border).

First select your picture, then the shape.
Click Drawing tools, click Format, Insert shapes group. Finally click on Merge shapes.

You need the Intersect option.

All that is left is the desired part of the picture. No need to compress to get rid of the excess parts of the picture.
