Transform a black and white picture into a colored one with Morph - PPT 2019

To do this you need two photos, one in black and white and another one in color on top of it.

Add the colored photo to your slide. To make it black and white click the Format tab under Picture tools. In the Adjust group click the Color button and under Color saturation choose 0 % saturation. Adjust the color tone if needed.

Add the color photo on top of the black and white one.

Leave it selected and click the Crop button on the Format tab. Crop the photo so that the handles fall completely outside the photo.

Now copy the first slide by right clicking it and choose Duplicate slide.

On the duplicate select the cropped photo and again click the Crop button. Move the cropped photo by positioning on the border of the crop and dragging it on top of the black and white photo again. Use the handles to make the color photo cover the whole of the black and white photo.

Now select the Transition tab and click on the Morph transition. You can adapt the speed of the transition in the Timing group in the Duration spin box.

You can do this on part of a photo too, just move the cropped photo on top of the black and white one and enlarge it a little if necessary.

Morphing different shapes by using the adjustment handle in PPT 2019

Normally the Morph transition does not work while using non identical objects. In a previous article I explained that this can be circumvented by renaming the objects in the selection pane on both slides. See my article:

There is another solution to the problem, be it a limited one. You can use the adjustment handles to morph an object into another one. In fact it is the same shape that gets transformed not two different shapes, a little bit of cheating.
For instance, let's say you draw a rounded square (drawing tool rectangle with rounded corners, holding down the shift key while you draw) on one slide. Then you copy the first slide and you adjust the object into a perfect circle. Look at the video below which shows you how it is done.

Unfortunately not all shapes are equipped with adjustment handles. In the example below you can see shapes that do not have one (left) and shapes that do have one (right).

Depending on the shape you draw the effect can be spectacular or not.

Morph with SmartArt in PPT 2019

You can use the Morph transition on slides containing SmartArt. Below there is an example of a SmartArt object from the list category, Alternating picture blocks.

After inserting the object type the text in the textboxes, insert the images by clicking on the picture icon. Finally insert a text box on top of the SmartArt object. Format the text in bold and shadow and apply a suitable text size.

Then activate the Selection pane (Alt +F10) and rename the smartart object and textbox with a suitable name preceeded by two exclamation marks.

Now duplicate the first slide 4 times.

On the second and following slides select the SmartArt picture and enlarge it using the Larger button in the Shapes group on the Format tab of SmartArt tools.

On the same tab you can change the shape by using the Change shape button just above the Larger button. Move the picture and the textbox to the needed position.

Change the formatting of the textbox by changing the size and colour of the text.

Repeat this whole process for the next slides.

Now select slides 2-5 and apply the Morph transition from the Transition tab.

Change the duration of the transition if needed using the Duration option in the Timings group.

By renaming the objects you can use the Morph transition to the full extent.

Morphing with non identical shapes in PPT 2019

As I indicated in a previous post, it is not possible to morph different shapes with each other by default. Suppose you have placed a square and a circle on one slide and you want to morph it on a second slide to a parallelogram and a hexagon.

If you try this in the usual way there is no morphing effect.
As you can see in the following video the two shapes do not really merge into one another.

Fortunately there is a way to accomplish this.

Rename the objects

First activate the Selection pane by pressing the keyboard combination Alt+F10. (for alternative possibilities see my previous article Two ways to quickly activate the selection pane).

Every object on the first and second slide must have the same name. The name should begin with double exclamation marks !!

In the Selection pane double click on the current name of the object till your cursor is in the field.
Type the two exclamation marks followed by the new name and press enter.
Repeat this for the second slide, see the example below:

Now select slide two and apply the Morph transition from the Transition tab.

Using this method you can also Morph two different pictures.

Just as with shapes rename the pictures in the selection pane. On the slide give the picture a different shape by going to Picture Tools, Format tab, Picture styles group, select the appropriate style.
Do not forget the two exclamation marks.
In the example below the first two slides have no renamed pictures in the following two they do.

Morphing with text - PPT 2019

When using the Morph transition you also can choose to morph text. Here also you can add, move text, increase/decrease size or change colour. There are two options, morph with words and morph with characters. If you want to try it yourself download this file from my OneDrive.

How do you handle it?

1. First you add the text to the slide.
2. Then copy the original slide as many times as you need.
3. On the copies move, increase/decrease size, add, change colour of the text
4. Finally apply the Morph transition using the Transition tab.

Morph with text

In this presentation the first slide (blank layout) has text and a picture which is placed outside the visible slide.

Copy the first slide three times. You can do that quickly by right clicking the slide and choosing Duplicate slide. Or you can use the keyboard shortcut Alt+Shift+D.

On the copies you add text boxes, move existing text, or change the size and colour. All the text items are in a text box. The picture is moved onto the slide.

Finally click the Transition tab, select slides 2-4 and apply the Morph transition. Then click the Effect options button and choose Words or Characters.

In the video below you can watch an eight-slide presentation.The first four slides use the Words morph effect the last four the Characters morph effect.

One of my more popular articles on this blog discusses how to enlarge and move a picture then return to the original spot and dimensions. To do that one uses animation and animation triggers.

Starting with PPT 2016 you can do this without using any animation. Just use the new Morph transition.
Let us take the same example slide from my previous article.

The aim is to enlarge the three photos and then return to the previous position and size.

First duplicate the first slide 6 times, right-click the slide and choose Duplicate slide, then press F4 five times to repeat the last action.

On slide two move the picture and place it in the large green rectangle. Adjust the size so that it fits the rectangle. On slide three do the reverse, return to the original spot which is easy in this case as it is a copy of the first slide. So the picture is already in position.

On slide four move the second photo and adjust its size, on slide five move it again, which is easy in this case as it is a copy of the first slide. So the picture is already in position.

On slide six and seven we repeat the same procedure.

Finally as a last step select slide 2-7, go to the Transition tab and choose the Morph transition.

There are a few disadvantages to using Morph here. You need several slides to obtain the same effect. You can't alter the order in which the photos appear and you can't repeat the same transition several times.

On the other hand morphing is not that difficult to execute and it gives excellent results.

Animate several textboxes on the same spot using the Morph transition in PPT 2019

In my previous article  (Animate several text boxes on-same-spot) I discussed the animation of several text boxes on the same spot using animation.

Starting with PPT 2016 you can achieve this without using any animation. The new Morph transition will take care of this. I am using the same presentation as in my previous article.

Create your first slide with the four text boxes you need. Do not worry about the alignment we will do that later.

Copy the slide three times. Right-click the slide and choose Duplicate slide.

Repeat the process for the other slides (you can also use the F4 function key to repeat the last action).

Now delete the superfluous text boxes on the duplicate slides.

Select each text box on the slide and align it horizontally and vertically using the Arrange button on the Home tab. In the Position objects section select the Align option.

Considering that there is no transition for the first slide you will have to add animation. You could avoid this problem by adding a title slide so that the first newspaper title is no longer the first slide.

Select the text box and add the fade animation using the Animation tab. Double click the entry in the animation pane and on the effects tab provide a word by word animation with a delay of 30 % between words. Start with previous and a duration of 3 seconds. After starting the presentation the text box will automatically appear.

Select the remaining slides in the left hand pane and click the transition tab then choose Morph.

Click the Effect options button and choose Characters. Next to Duration increase to 3 seconds.

Start the presentation and click for every transition between the slides.
